Simple and effective September 6, 2010 billmark Initially tried a more expensive unit that worked (supposed to anyway) with a magnetic sensor buried next to driveway. Useless. This is simple and effective. I'd rather get an occasional false alarm than none at all, and it's normally caused by animals or unusually high winds affecting nearby trees. Receiver is about 120-150' from transmitter. Antenna could me of the more modern "rubberized" type instead of 30+ year old solid, extending type technology. Purchased the remote alarm for when we are in the back of the property and works great as well.
Would buy again and recommend.
Picky person satisfied August 6, 2010 John (Auburn, CA USA) I have a driveway that is about 400 feet from the street and have an electric gate half-way up. There are numerous pine trees that block the view to the street, thus causing me to want to know when someone was driving or walking up my driveway.
I don't write many reviews of things I buy unless I am really impressed or really disappointed. I did extensive research on driveway alerts and finally decided on the Dakota alert ht-kit murs long range alert driveway system. I bought the system and I got the birdhouse also.
I found the instructions and the visuals to be somewhat limited, so I called Dakota Alert customer service. I got an instant phone answer to a real live person and no recording. The customer service person was an American in America and had complete knowledge of the product. Within a matter of a couple of minutes my questions were answered and my setup was completed. It is so nice to call customer service on a product where you aren't routed to the Philippines or India.
I had the whole system put together, including the bird house in about 20 minutes. About 10 minutes was spent putting together the bird house. Keep in mind that the bird house is a disguise and is not intended for birds... The holes were pre-drilled and came with high quality weather resistant screws(even one extra screw). All sides lettered inside so you put it together right. I am glad I purchased the bird house. It covers and disguises the transmitter and will probably protect it from the elements.
I mounted the transmitter(don't take off the translucent covering of the lens--I didn't because I asked the support tech) about 300 feet from the receiver. Tested it with a car and a person and it worked perfect.
I later had some false announcements and figured out that when the wind blew, the branches of the pine tree next to it caused it to announce. Also, make sure the transmitter is mounted at the right height and direction.
I charged the portable radio, made sure it was defaulted to channel 01 and it also works perfect, giving me announcements about 1000 feet away in my back yard. This isn't one of those flimsy radios that say they will transmit 5 miles and then when you get them home you can't even use them from one side of the house to the other. This radio will transmit from anywhere on my property(only 3 acres) to the base station very well.
So, in summary, I am very happy with the whole unit and am going to buy another transmitter for my back yard.
Good job, Dakota; thank you very much.
Caught a prowler July 18, 2010 Betty L. Montgomery (DAYTON, TX, US) Had a theft a couple of weeks ago Then found this system,We received it just a few days after ordering.Last night it paid for itself.. We caught a prowler at our cars .. Thanks to the alarm system ,we were able to "detain" him until the cops got here.. Our neighbors are waiting for theirs to come in ...It is simple to use
great product July 13, 2010 satisfied customer Purchased this unit to install on our half mile long driveway. Does an excellent job letting us know when someone crossing in front of it, giving us plenty of notice of someone being on our property. Would easily recommend to others, does as it stated it would.
Excellent Driveway Alert System June 2, 2010 L. Eric Ray (Birmingham, AL USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have 80 acres adjacent to a national forest. My gate is approximately 1/4 mile from my house. My driveway winds through heavily wooded areas and around a small lake to my house. I have needed a long range driveway alert system that would transmit through heavy forest. I have been extremely pleased with the performance of this system. I have had very few "false alarms". I suspect that they were deer or coyotes. I purchased the "bird house" to hide the transmitter and it really looks like it is a bird house (except, if you look really close, you will see an antenna coming out the roof. I was going to wrap the antenna with camo tape, but it was not really necessary since from about 20 ft away, you can't really see it. I also purchased a hand-held receiver for when I am working outside or walking in the woods. I can also use it to communicate with the base station. Good value! The only improvement I would make to the design would be to transmit sound and maybe a picture, but that would make it much more expensive, stretch the technology, and use up batteries too quickly. I am happy with what I have.
