| Customer Reviews: Adequate basic system but NOT compatible with the iPhone July 29, 2010 Tech-Guru (Northern California) I was looking for a basic DVR H.264 surveillance system. My requirements were:
1- Record on motion only
2- Web accessible
3- iPhone accessible
4- Hard Drive pre-installed
5- Relatively inexpensive
I purchased both an 8 channel and 4 channel Zmodo unit (they both work the same way, except for the number of cameras). The system uses LINUX and has BNC (female) connectors to attach standard CCTV cameras. The system also has both a VGA and BNC output, so you can use a TV or computer monitor as the viewer unit. The unit comes with a USB mouse, a manual, and power supply. NOTE: Please remember that you need to purchase a relatively inexpensive BNC-to-RCA adaptor (about $1) to watch the video on your television.
PROS-
-Relatively simple installation for basic viewing (e.g. not web or iPhone)
-Good array of functionality that will make most users happy
CONS-
-Relatively poor documentation, particularly on the web setup (despite this I was able to get it operational in about 2 hours)
-You need to manually enter the DHCP address for web connectivity (not auto-sensing)
-Despite what the manual says, there is no "MOTION ONLY" recording mode...the only two choices are ALWAYS ON or TIME SCHEDULED (you can activate motion sensing, but this is only for the alarm files and notification, not recording). This is not a deal-breaker BUT instead of holding 6 months of video, it will only hold about 10 days and you have to painfully scroll through the video files to find what you are looking for.
-TERRIBLE TECHNICAL SUPPORT (my email to them with questions remained unanswered, there is no firmware updates on the product manufacturer's website).
- DOES NOT WORK WITH THE iPHONE FOR STREAMING VIDEO (let me explain this a little more)...The Zmodo documentation says to use the Free App "APLAYER" to view the cameras on the iPhone. APLAYER was last updated in 2009 and is not compatible with the iPhone version 4 operating system (version 4, not iPhone 4). So my iPhone 3Gs does not work since the application does not work. I do get limited video on the iPhone (a streaming video for a few seconds and it locks up).
There is no tech support for the application or replies from Zmoto, so if you can live with these inconveniences, all in all, it is not a bad choice.
